MENOPAUSE & NUTRITION: SUPPORTING YOUR BODY THROUGH CHANGE

Menopause is a completely natural part of life however that doesn’t mean it’s always easy.

For many women, the years around menopause can bring changes they weren’t expecting. Hot flushes, disrupted sleep, changes in mood and energy, shifts in appetite, muscle mass and body shape can all be part of the picture.

And while weight gain often gets a lot of attention during menopause, there is so much more happening beneath the surface.

We believe menopause deserves to be seen as an important stage of life – not a problem to be fixed, but a transition where the right support can make a real difference to your health and quality of life.

So, what actually happens during menopause?

Menopause marks the end of menstrual periods and is confirmed after 12 consecutive months without a period. Natural menopause most commonly occurs between 45 and 55, with the average age around 51.

But menopause doesn’t happen overnight.

Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, when hormones fluctuate, periods may become irregular and symptoms can begin.

You may also experience menopause earlier due to certain medical procedures, hormonal contraceptives or medications. Even when periods aren’t a reliable marker, the hormonal and physical changes can still occur.

Why does my body feel different?

You might notice that your body doesn’t respond quite the way it used to.

Perhaps your energy levels have changed, your sleep isn’t what it once was, your appetite or mood feels different, or your clothes fit a little differently despite the number on the scales staying the same.

You’re not imagining it.

During menopause, hormonal changes, alongside the natural loss of muscle that occurs with ageing, can affect how your body uses and stores energy. This can influence blood sugar, bone health, cholesterol, blood pressure and heart health.

That’s why we think it’s helpful to look beyond the scales.

Instead of only asking:

“How do I lose weight?”

Can we invite you to ask:

“How can I nourish and support my body through this change?”

This doesn’t mean following another restrictive diet or trying to eat perfectly.

We’d much rather focus on what you can add and include in your day.

A Mediterranean-style approach can be a great place to start, with plenty of vegetables and fruit, whole grains such as oats and seedy bread, legumes like lentils and beans, lean sources of protein, and healthy fats from extra virgin olive oil, avocado, nuts and seeds. Currently, the evidence suggests that diets higher in these foods are associated with fewer or less intense menopausal symptoms, including hot flushes, disrupted sleep and psychological symptoms.

Calcium-rich foods are also particularly important as oestrogen levels decline and bone health becomes increasingly important.

We would also recommend eating regularly throughout the day to support steady energy and blood sugar levels.

It’s not about eating perfectly

There really is no perfect menopause diet.

You don’t need to overhaul everything you eat, cut out your favourite foods or spend your life counting calories.

It’s about nourishing your body, supporting your muscles and bones, and finding an approach to food that feels good, is sustainable and takes up minimal brain space.

Before we finish, we want to validate that your body isn’t failing you. It’s changing.
